Most of the College Kids have been listening to the Dropkick Murphys for several years, but their unique sound and individual style have for the most part kept them out of the mainstream everywhere that is not Boston or Ireland.
The Dropkicks formed in Quincy Massachusetts in 1996 as a fun activity for several friends; however, they soon became aware that people enjoyed their unique style and a tour and album soon became possible. They have since released six studio albums. Arguably their most well known song, "I'm Shipping up to Boston" featured as the opening theme to 2007's best picture, The Departed. The Dropkick's latest work and first album released under a major record label, The Meanest of Times, debuted at #20 on the Billboard Charts and also was featured in Rolling Stone's Top 50 Albums of 2007.
The Dropkick's unique sound is the driving force behind their popularity in Boston. They effectively combine a Celtic sound, often including bagpipes, with punk, and often heavier rock. This has made them one of the most recognizable and unique bands on the radio. A look through their albums will show the development of the Dropkick's sound throughout the years.
While they do not get the radio play they deserve, the Dropkick Murphys are top notch artists and the College Kids highly suggest you take the time to experience them.

College Kid Music Discovery: Hilltop Hoods

Over break, all the college kids were hanging out like we do, and a song came on that I didn't recognize. It had an awesome beat and I instantly wanted to press the repeat button (which I did). It was a nice break from the hip-hop we all here on the radio everyday which is mostly quite annoying (except of course Snoop Dogg's new single Sensual Seduction). Hilltop Hoods formed in the down-under in 1991 when two of the three members met in High School.
The two albums I currently have, and listen to constantly, are The Calling (2003) and The Hard Road Restrung (2007). Each of them have a very unique sound that is completed by DJ Debris; the third member of the group. College Music Discovery: Acid Mothers Temple

If you want to get freaked out, listen to Acid Mothers Temple. This band, hailing from Japan, is the epitome of fucked-up. The main philosophy of Acid Mothers Temple is; do whatever the hell you want. They have constant additions to the band which keep them progressing, producing some of the most mind-blowing music you will ever hear. Their songs are based on free formats, which produce some of the most interesting jams I have ever heard. The live shows are also out of this world. They have been known to completely destroy stages and instruments to produce the sounds that they want. Acid Mothers Temple isn’t the type of band to put on when you want to chill out with your buddies and get loaded, but they are good when you are chewing caps. College Music Discovery - The Fiery Furnaces
As we have said many times before, college is where you discover new and interesting music. College in general is a place to find things you've never experienced before (alcohol, hippies, etc.).
One of my close friends introduced me to this Indie Rock band that originated in NYC. Their music is like nothing I've ever listened to before. They experiment with sounds that you would never think to hear coming from your speakers.
Their latest album right now is Bitter Tea which I find to be their best (for what I've listened to). Their new album drops October 9th, and it's entitled Window City. I suggest you give these guys a listen and see if you are fond of them. Maybe borrow their CD from a friend (that's what I did).

College Music Discovery: Hilltop Hoods

Hilltop Hoods is one of the most well know hip-hop groups in Australia. The group members Suffa, Pressure, and DJ Debris formed Hilltop in 1991. They have a unique style of combining live instruments with sampling. DJ Debris presence is heard on every track, which makes each one more lively and interesting.
Their songs cover a variety of different topics from the lives of the Hilltop members. Their upbeat alternative style is refreshing and enjoyable.
